Fitness: The Google Diet

Yes you read the header right, Google, the number 1 search engine for generation x has a diet. And its free! Yes its free, no pills, shakes or email log-in required! Just a few simple rules/guidelines to follow.

Google is on a mission… This tech giant is dedicated to helping its employees make better food choices.


Reading this was music to my ears and I couldn’t help but wish that public schools in America would adopt this philosophy as well. But at least we’re starting somewhere! Google’s philosophy is easy, limiting the bad (unhealthy) options and providing more healthy options gradually is a subtle way to steer people to make better food choices. And when you think about this is a no brainer. I don’t know about you but how many times have you wished Panera had a drive thru or delivered single servings? Even Burger King now has delivery in select states. Every time I’m in a rush or forgot to pack healthy snacks I feel tempted by society to grab something unhealthy! Why, because when you live in the city like me, McDonalds, Fried Chicken Spots and  Sugar Packed Coffee Shops are at corner. It may not happen 100% of the time but people will make a better choice given the option.


And so Google is most definitely on to something. Heres how you can try the Google Diet at home…

  1. Focus On Produce: This is something I know to be true! A few years back I read the book Eat This, Not That and it helped me tremendously. Knowledge is power, and I took what I learned and applied it to real life. In the book it said that when grocery shopping avoid the isles and shop on the perimeter. Think about your local market (not Trader Joes or Whole Foods) all the food groups are on the perimeter, starting with produce.When you walk into Google’s cafe the first thing you see is the salad bar and fruit display. 
  2. Downsize You Plate: Last month personal trainer Charity Lynette talked about grabbing smaller plates to help with portion control. Google now offers its employees two plate size options to help with this as well. The smaller the plate the less food you can pile on it. 
  3. Stick With Portions: As you know I’m on a heath and fitness journey and I use pre-packaged meals to help me do this, along with some tips I learned from Jillian Micheals. “Google is test driving pre-plated meals that spell out the exact number of calories in each dish.” Again knowledge is power, use it. 
  4. Limit Liquid Calories: I always say I don’t drink what I can eat! I would rather have a cupcake than a glass of pink lemonade. The only juice I keep in my frig is orange juice (no sugar added) and Trader Joes Pineapple Juice. In stead I keep water, Powerade lite and flavored water.
  5. Hide The Sweets:  At Google, sweets are not taboo but they are harder to find in the cafeteria.” I’m not too sure how I feel about this rule. I adore sweets, and sometimes that love affair gets me in trouble. As I said in my last video I eat something sweet every night. I believe it helps me keep my sanity and by allowing myself to eat sweets I don’t feel like I’m on a diet. Again for me, sweets is all about portion control . I don’t eat a whole anything. I have 1/2 cup ice cream, 1/2 a slice of pie, 1/2 of the cupcake etc… Eat the serving size and you don’t have to worry about your thighs. Thats my philosphy!
